Artificial Intelligence is not a space-age fantasy anymore only for Silicon Valley engineers. It is a free, publicly accessible super power that resides in your browser.
If you are a student, freelancer, small business owner or just curious, you may be concerned that the best tools are locked behind $20/month paywalls.
They aren’t.
Indeed, the “free tier” of modern A.I. is so good that millions of people use it daily without ever spending a cent. But with thousands of tools being released every week, it can become overwhelming.
After testing over 50 different AI tools, I will reveal the best free ones for beginners. Here’s your curated starter kit.
Table of Contents
Toggle1. ChatGPT (OpenAI)
Best for: General tasks, writing, brainstorming and coding.
Free Tier Cap: Use of GPT-4o (only limited messages allowed every few hours) & GPT-3. 5 (unlimited).
You can’t talk about free AI without beginning here. The paid version ($20) has more advanced features, but the free version is still a lot for beginners.
What you can do for free:
Compose emails, essays or captions for social media.
Fix simple code bugs (Python, JavaScript, HTML).
Summarize long articles or YouTube videos (just paste the text).
Be a thesaurus or translator.
The Beginner Tip: Don’t Use GPT-3 5 if you can help it. Your GPT-4o messages will reset in October 2023. GPT-4o is much stronger at logic and adhering to detailed instructions. Upload photos of your fridge using the mobile app and ask “What can I cook with these ingredients?”

2. Microsoft Copilot
Best for: Factual questions, current news and indexing.
Free Tier Limitation: No limits at all — with GPT-4 (and even GPT-4 Turbo).
What most people don’t know is that Microsoft is giving away GPT-4 for free enclosed within Bing. The catch? It is incorporated in the Bing search engine and Edge browser. But in all seriousness: That’s a feature, not a bug.
What beginners love it:
It Cites Sources: Unlike regular ChatGPT, Copilot will tell you where it found information. You can click on the links for fact-checking (an important step to avoid what’s known as “hallucinations”).
It Reads the Web: It can browse the internet, by default. Try asking it “What are the news headlines today?” or “Summarize this specific website.”
Image Creation: It adds the free version of DALL-E 3 (more on that below).
The Beginner Tip: Use “Copilot in Edge” to summarize PDFs or long web articles with just one click. In the sidebar, click the little blue “N” logo.

3. Leonardo.AI – The Artist
Best For: Quality images and character design, concept art
Free Tier Limit: 150 tokens per day (50–150 images approximately).
Yes, I did say Midjourney is the king of AI art, but it comes with a fee and needs Discord. Stable Diffusion is strong, but you need a computer science degree to set it up locally. Leonardo. AI occupies a sweet spot: a web app that looks and feels like video game input.
What you can do for free:
Create game assets (swords, trees, UI icons).
Create photorealistic portraits.
Remove objects from a photo using “Canvas Editor” (like Photoshop AI but free)
For the beginner: Every day at 8:00 PM EST, you receive 150 free credits. These do not roll over, so use them or lose them. Begin with the “Leonardo Anime XL” or “DreamShaper v7” models—they are the easiest to start.

4. ElevenLabs
Best for: Converting text to decent-sounding audiobooks or voice-overs.
Free Tier Cap: 10,000 characters a month on the web; unlimited in mobile app
If you’re a YouTube shorts or TikTok content creator, you’ve heard ElevenLabs voices. They sound nearly indistinguishable from humans. Their paid plans are exorbitantly priced, but separate from that, their brand new “ElevenLabs Reader” mobile app is entirely free!
The Catch: The free web version has its limits. (The value is also in its free mobile app.)
What you can do for free:
Drop any article, PDF or ePub file into the app.
Seek it out with ultra-realistic voices (not robotic monotone).
Voice Design ] Activate this option to clone a certain accent or tone.
The Beginner Tip: Study using the Reader app. Grab your lecture notes or a dense Wikipedia page, paste it in, and listen while you commute or wash dishes.

5. Runway
Best for: Erasing backgrounds, and deleting objects from video; making short clips
Free Tier Limit: 125 credits (one time only) + limited daily.
Runway is the tool used for many of these Hollywood VFX experiments. As a newcomer you are going to be doing some rudimentary stuff rather than the full movie generation, but their “AI Tools” dashboard will have you using it very frequently.
Runway free features market: Top Features
Upload any video clip, press one button and you get the green screen output.
Inpainting: Draw a box around a person in a video and type “remove” — the AI makes them disappear.
Text to Video (Gen-2): You have a few free generations on hand here for experimentation. You type in “cinematic shot of a cat walking through fog” and receive a 4-second clip.
The Beginner Tip: Don’t use your free credits on text-to-video (it’s super-expensive). First, use the “Green Screen” and “Erase & Replace” tools — they are ultimately the most reliable tools you can use to edit things for social media.

6. Perplexity AI
Best for: Extensive research, mastering new topics quickly.
Free Tier Limit: Unlimited (with occasional upgrade pop-up)
Google gives you links. ChatGPT gives you a guess. Perplexity provides an answer, with footnotes. It’s an “answer engine” that crawls the web in real time and distills the results into a single paragraph.
How beginners use it:
“Explain quantum computing to me like I’m 12 years old.”
Comparison Table: Nikon Z5 vs Canon R8 Camera Pros & Cons
“Rome, 7-day itinerary with budget options.
The Beginner Trip: Hit the “Focus” button. You could restrict the search to only for Academic papers (best for students) or Reddit (well suited for genuine product reviews).

The "Not Quite Free" Warning
Before you go, let me spare you some headache. There is a category of AI that has no inherent cost, but is infuriating if you start from scratch: Local LLMs (yes, Llama 3 or Mistral).
You will see Youtube`s run this on their own systems. Do not try unless you have an extremely expensive gaming PC with 16GB of VRAM. It is slow, and setting it up requires coding skills.
As a result, use only the above cloud tools. They live on OpenAI’s supercomputers, not your laptop.
Your First Weekend Plan
Feeling overwhelmed? Here is a 2-hour roadmap:
Open ChatGPT (GPT-4o) — Saturday Morning (1 hour): Request that it create a cover letter for a fictitious job. Then you prompt it to revise that as poetry. See how it interprets tone.
Saturday Afternoon (30 mins): Visit Leonardo. ai. Create 10 images of “a cyberpunk raccoon.” Download your favorite.
Sunday (30 mins): Install ElevenLabs Reader app. Copy and paste a long email or article, then listen to it as you tidy up your room.
AI is not about replacing human creativity; it is about eliminating the mind-numbing friction. These are your training wheels, free tools.
